News from Spaxton Parish Council

New Parish Councillors

Kathryn Frawley

My husband and I moved to Spaxton, to be closer to family, just over a year ago from a semi-rural village in Kent.  Back in the South East I was a teacher in a Greater London mainstream secondary school for 24 years. I am now delighted to be teaching in a wonderful Special School in Taunton.

One of the reasons why we chose Spaxton was because we were struck by the strong sense of community, which was evident throughout the village. We are thankful to everyone for making us feel incredibly welcome since we arrived.

I recognise and appreciate the importance of a cohesive community and to ensure this can be maintained, allowed to flourish and remain sustainable for future generations a committed and constructive body of representatives is never more so important that it is today.

I was brought up in Bridgwater and went to school there.  After leaving, I lived in Manchester, London, Zurich and Manhattan working in the Finance sector.  A second career in mental health in the NHS was followed by 17 years running my own business.

I moved to Spaxton 9 years ago and have since retired.  I volunteer for our lovely Community Shop and at Steart Marshes.  I coordinated the delivery of groceries from the village shop during COVID.  For a while, I was secretary for the Spaxton Community Land Trust. I am on the Spaxton Flower Show Committee and coordinate the teas twice a year.

We have a village full of people who care a great deal for others and for the parish.  This is a terrific resource.  I am particularly interested in the natural world and our relationship to it.  Sustaining our precious countryside is something we all want.  As a Parish Councillor, I hope to be a driving force behind Spaxton’s efforts to become a parish known for its biodiversity and ecological sustainability.  It needs to be a whole community approach.

I’m a local farmer who has lived in the parish for almost 40 years, Farming keeps me closely connected to the land and to the local community, which is something I really value.
When I’m not out working, I enjoy spending time with my family and keeping active through sport.
As a new member of the council, I’m looking forward to getting involved, listening to residents, and helping where I can to support the village and keep it a great place to live.

I am delighted to become a Parish Councillor. I have lived in Merridge for 4 years and have family in Spaxton as well. I volunteer in Spaxton Shop and I am involved with the school through my grandchildren.
I want to make a positive contribution to the local community and hope to do so as a councillor.

Allotments available

A number of plots have become available to rent, if anyone is interested in growing their own produce. We get the sense that Spaxton’s whole – and even half – plots are very generously sized and possibly too much for people to take on, so are very willing to consider splitting plots into quarters, or perhaps smaller sizes.
